This month we chatted about fear and setbacks. These residual limbs react differently than a non-amputated limb. Often, we deal with setbacks that are not only painful, but hard to wade through mentally.
April is limb loss and difference awareness month, and a special time to love an amputee.
Some of the fears that we talked about are of course setbacks; the surgery and healing that come with them. We also talked about falling, and that immediate thought of, OH NO! Often it is falling that derails our healing, and this is definitely a fear that we all share.
We also talked about modifications in our homes and workplaces, and the fear of being able to be able. Amputations change everything in our lives, and there is a residual fear that we cannot do them day to day.
The flip side of fear is determination, and I have not come across a more determined group of people than those in this support group and those that I have met recovering in the hospitals. I am honored to know and be a part of this group of people that look fear in the face and overcome the odds stacked against them.
